Beccles is a small market town located in the county of Suffolk, England. It is situated on the banks of the River Waveney, close to the Norfolk border, and is around 11 miles west of Lowestoft and 6 miles south-east of Bungay.

The town has a long history, with evidence of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements found in the area. The town was founded by the Saxons in the early 6th century and was known as Beccels (meaning ‘hills with beech trees’). Throughout the Middle Ages, Beccles grew in size and importance, with the establishment of a Benedictine priory in 1130 and a weekly market in 1250. It was also a busy port and trading centre due to its location on the tidal River Waveney.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the town prospered and became the second most important port in East Anglia after Great Yarmouth. The town was also a major centre for corn milling. However, with the opening of the River Bure in 1779, the majority of the town’s trade moved to the port of Great Yarmouth, leading to Beccles’ decline.

Beccles is now a thriving tourist destination, with its picturesque streets, medieval buildings, and its beautiful riverside setting. The town has an impressive range of independent shops, cafés, and restaurants, as well as a selection of galleries and museums.

The town is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which dates back to the 13th century; the former priory, which is now a private residence; and the Great Market Hall, which was built in 1717. Other notable attractions include Beccles Lido, a 1930s outdoor swimming pool; the Beccles and Bungay Circular Walk, which takes in some of the area's most stunning scenery; and the Beccles Public Hall, which was built in 1883 and hosts a variety of events.

Beccles is also home to a number of festivals and events throughout the year, such as the Beccles Arts Festival, the Beccles Food and Drink Festival, and the Beccles Music Festival.
